Fake Out-of-Home for Nike – Sneaker on the Screen
Personal project, 2024 – shot on iPhone, motion tracking and compositing in After Effects, CGI in Cinema 4D, rendered with Octane Render.
About the project
This personal project from 2024 is a Fake Out-of-Home clip (FOOH) for Nike – created without a brief, to show skills in 3D compositing. A sneaker appears to grow out of a large-format video wall on a building facade.
Fake Out-of-Home refers to ad clips that look like real, giant billboard or video-wall placements in public space – but are actually pure CGI composites, with no real ad space ever booked. The format has been hugely popular on social media for a few years now, because it looks deceptively real and generates massive reach without the real-world cost of an outdoor campaign.
Technique
The source footage – the facade with the video wall – was shot on a regular iPhone. Motion tracking was then done in After Effects: the camera movement of the handheld shot was extracted so the 3D object would later move along with it precisely.
The sneaker was built as a 3D model in Cinema 4D, textured and rendered with Octane Render – matching the camera movement, perspective and lighting of the iPhone footage.
Final compositing – integration into the source footage and colour correction – was also done in After Effects. Getting the lighting and shadows to exactly match the original material was key to making the FOOH illusion of a real video wall work.
