Mercedes-Benz VISION EQXX Spec Ad – Driving through a CGI Landscape
Personal project, 2023 – landscape with World Creator, vehicle animation in Cinema 4D, rendered with Octane Render.
About the project
This personal project from 2023 is a spec ad for the Mercedes-Benz VISION EQXX – created without a brief, in the style of a classic car commercial. At dusk, the car drives along a winding mountain road until it finally comes to a stop on a plateau overlooking the landscape.
The focus was on a realistic vehicle animation and on the landscape itself. The car had to move as if it had been filmed for real. The landscape, in turn, had to feel vast, believable and varied – with ridges, hairpin bends and coastline – and give the car a stage like the ones known from real car commercials. Detail shots of the light strip, wheels and rear complement the driving scenes.
Technique
The landscape was created with World Creator, a tool for generating large, realistic terrains. This made it possible to build an expansive environment in which the road and the individual camera setups could be placed deliberately.
Terrain, vehicle and cameras were assembled in Cinema 4D, where the vehicle animation was also created. To make it look realistic, the driving, wheel rotation and camera movement had to work together convincingly – just like on a real car shoot. Rendering was done with Octane Render – with dusk lighting, haze and depth of field for a cinematic, high-end look.
