Growing Particle Form with X-Particles

Personal project, 2024 – particle simulation with X-Particles, rendered with Octane Render in Cinema 4D.

About the project

This personal project from 2024 shows an organic form made entirely of particles. A structure reminiscent of a blossom or a mushroom grows up from a small bud. As it unfolds, its colour shifts from cool blue-green through orange to glowing red.

The piece is deliberately experimental: it is not about a specific product, but about how alive and organic a pure particle structure can feel – with close-ups in which the individual particles become visible as a surface.

Technique

The particle structure was simulated with X-Particles in Cinema 4D. The growth and deformation of the form emerge from the motion of a very large number of individual particles. The colour gradients are bound directly to the particles and change over time.

Rendering was done with Octane Render. Each particle is rendered as its own small object, creating a finely structured, almost textile surface in the close-ups. A dark gradient background and soft lighting bring the colours of the form to the fore.
